Two settings for the market

The regular market sits in the Hake neighbourhood; larger editions have been staged at Koganei Shrine.

Musashi-Koganei and Koganei Shrine

The regular venue is reached from JR Chuo Line Musashi-Koganei Station. Special editions have been held at Koganei Shrine, 4-7-2 Nakamachi, Koganei City, Tokyo.

Hakeichi is a small morning market set along the Hake escarpment, the green hillside area locally nicknamed "Hake." It gathers neighbourhood bakers, kitchens, florists, stationers and makers into one calm, unhurried gathering place, where everything is offered with genuine care rather than mass-produced polish.

The market opens on the first Sunday of every month from nine in the morning until one in the afternoon, making it an easy ritual for regulars and visitors alike. The nearest station is Musashi-Koganei on the JR Chuo Line, a short and pleasant walk from the platforms down toward the hillside.

Food and drink stalls form the heart of the morning market, with bread, lunch boxes and coffee prepared on site by neighbourhood kitchens. Among the favourites is charcoal-boiled coffee brewed with water from Koganei well water, giving the cup a distinctive character that ties the drink directly to the surrounding landscape.

Flowers and plants occupy their own corner of the market, where table arrangements, seasonal plants and leafy greenery arrive from a custom-order flower shop. Each piece is composed by hand for a particular space or occasion, so the stall reads less like a shop counter and more like a working florist's table mid-conversation.

Stationery and craft goods sit alongside the edible offerings, with small makers displaying tools, paper goods and handmade objects. Visitors can browse a rotating selection of pieces from local writers and illustrators, discovering small-batch work that would never appear on a high street shelf.

Because the market is deliberately small, browsing feels personal. Vendors know their regulars, and a short queue often becomes a chat about the weather, the season or a new arrival on the flower stall. That sense of a familiar neighbourhood event is what draws many people back month after month.

The setting matters as much as the stalls themselves. The hillside above the station is known for its natural greenery and open outlook, and holding the market there means shoppers move between the view and the tables rather than between shopfronts and car parks.

Member shops and past events are listed on the site, so anyone curious can see who will be appearing on an upcoming Sunday and get a sense of how the market has grown over time. That record of previous gatherings adds continuity to what is otherwise a fresh, seasonal morning out.

Attending is simple: arrive early enough for the freshest bread and the slowest coffee, walk down from the station, and take your time. Four hours is plenty to see everything, chat with the people behind the tables and carry a small something home from the hillside market.
